RIM has released the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 update that offers a variety of new capabilities and security features for consumers, enterprises and developers.

PlayBook OS 2.1 has the ability to:
  • Securing all data on the tablet, enterprise-grade encryption can now be extended to secure personal data stored on the device.
  • Text via SMS using the new version of BlackBerry Bridge (version 2.1) subscribers can send text messages from their PlayBook with their BlackBerry smartphone, the new version of Bridge available in the BlackBerry App World.
  • Use Messages, Contacts, and Calendar applications in Portrait mode.
  • "Print" documents from your PC to your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet using the Print To Go app even if the PC and the tablet connected to a different network.
PlayBook OS 2.1 offers new features that simplify deployment in the enterprise tablet with BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. This includes over-the-air subscription to the BlackBerry Mobile Fusion server, support for ActiveSync certificate-based authentication, and additional IT policy controls.

For developers (and consumers), In-app payment system now extends to Android applications.

The update is now available as a download over-the-air. Customers are automatically notified of updates to the PlayBook, or they can press the gear icon (top right corner) and check for new versions under the "Update Software".
